Udzungwa Mountains

Overview

Udzungwa Mountains National Park is a part of 34 biodiversity hotspots due to its rich levels of biodiversity and endemism. Its massive forest panoramas and variety of gorgeous waterfalls are a great draw for trekkers.

The park is home of an important population of primates, including the Sanje Mangabey and the Iringa Red Colubus, which can only be found in Udzungwa.

FULL ITINERARY

Day 1:

* Use 06:00am SGR to depart from Dar to Morogoro (If coming from Dar Es Salaam)
* Dar to Morogoro by train (own cost)
* Morogoro to Udzungwa by car/bus (to be provided)
• 12km walk to GMP camp site, camp fire, dinner and overnight, camping.
• A person with an average fitness can walk up to GMP, a few hilly points with a gradual gain in elevation.

Day 2:

7km walk to Mwanihana Peak (2500m ASL) and back to GMP Camp. A total of 14km. It is cold at the peak, so it is better to carry a jacket.
• Demands good fitness since it is a challenging hike. It is difficult coming down, such I would advise the use of walking sticks.
• Packed Lunch
• Walk back to GMP, camp fire, dinner, and overnight

Day 3:

• 12km walk from GMP, stop at Sonjo waterfalls for pictures (not allowed to swim)
• Packed Lunch
• Overnight at Twiga hotel, Udzungwa (Bed & Breakfast)

Day 4:

• Plus 4km hike to Sanje Waterfalls, for swimming and picnic
• A bit challenging but manageable for an average person
• Packed lunch
• Hike back to the hotel, freshen up, and be ready for a drive back to Morogoro.
